2022-2023
Biodiversity Day in Pullough
Thank you to Nuala who came to visit us in school. Nuala was here to teach us all about a local habitat called 'The Grand Canal. We started the day off in the classroom with a talk and PowerPoint presentation. We then got to get up close and personal with some of the species supported by The Grand Canal.
We took a lovely walk along the canal with some swatches we made in class. We were able to identify many local trees, looking at shape, fruit and pattern.
Nothing like a friendly card game to help us learn all about Place Value!!
Pen Pal Letters
This year our 5th and 6th class students have connected with a primary school in Limerick to exchange informal letters throughout the year. We are hoping to develop our writing skills while making some new friends! The excitement was real when our first letters arrived!!
Tag Rugby
Our first session back on the big pitch for Tag Rugby. A great session and many thanks to Podge for training us again this year.
All About 5th & 6th Class!
Our Welcome Back Art
Class Blog 2021-2022
Welcome back to our class blog for the 2021/2022 school year. We are looking forward to sharing some of the wonderful activities we do every week.
Happy Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful ladies who do so much for us. We made some very thoughtful poems and a little gift box to place them in. We hope everyone had a lovely day.
Reading Buddies
Reading Buddies is in full swing across the school. 5th and 6th are taking the role of senior buddy very seriously. Listening, helping, encouraging and praising their little buddy every day. It is safe to say everyone is enjoying the time together.
Active School Leaders
Congratulations to our fifth and sixth class students who were appointed to the Active Schhools Committee this week. We look forward to all the wonderful activities around the school in Term 3!
Confirmation Art 2022
Movie Day!!
Wonder
We have been reading the brilliant novel by R.J. Palacio - Wonder. 'Wonder' is the story of Auggie, a boy born with a facial abnormality. The novel explores themes of empathy, friendship, acceptance and celebrating differences and is told from different perspectives. In the story, Auggie faces bullying and misunderstanding at school due to his appearance. We used Book Creator online to write a review and document our thoughts. Today we presented them in front of the class. We highly recommend this book to any other 5th/6th classes.
Getting some drive time in with our VEX robot Fling
Learning how to code using VEX VR
Tag Rugby Blitz
We had a great day at the 5th/6th Class Tag Rugby Blitz in Ferbane. We made it to the final four of the tournament. Jack, Sophie and Will were in fine kicking form and nailed each one in the kick off. Unfortunately the final was just out of reach on the day. Well done to all the organisers and special thanks to our rugby coach Podge.
We were lucky enough to get our hands on the Clarke Cup today. Well done to the Offaly U20's.
Science live with The Rediscovery Centre
We used red cabbage, a natural PH indicator to determine if different household substances were an acid, a base or neutral. We had great fun mixing and using our PH scale to investigate. We also found out what happens when you mix an acid and a base.
Happy Grandparents Day!
Winter Wonderland
A lovely stroll along the canal!
A few snaps from our Christmas play recorded in December. Mr. Scrooge My Teacher.
Best of luck!
Best of luck to these four boys playing an important soccer game Saturday in Wexford. Last 32 in Ireland. Best wishes from all your classmates.
Starting the year on a positive note: With hearts and helping hands, we can accomplish anything!
Our Cityscape Artwork
We have been learning all about warm and cool colours and how to blend them together. We also looked at using line to create a shadow. The finished pieces are fantastic. We have a very talented bunch.

Sixth class had a lovely trip to Killina Presentation Secondary School. We met Mr. Cotter and Mr. Lawless and enjoyed a tour of the school. Thank you for the invitation.
Happy Halloween from all in 5th and 6th.

Home Learning January 2021
Welcome back fifth and sixth class! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and I can’t wait to hear all about it. Once again we are back to working remotely, we have all been using See Saw since September one evening a week and everyone has done a fantastic job so far. I hope that I will see you all back in the classroom very soon!
Work will be assigned to you every Sunday evening for the coming week. I will attach it as a word document and you can download it as you have done before. I will be using See Saw and my school email address ([email protected]) to communicate with you for the next few weeks.
I have uploaded activities for this week that you might like to complete. Please only complete what you can, there is no pressure to do all the activities. I know that some of you may need see saw codes again so they have been emailed to you. I look forward to hearing from you all on see saw. All work can be completed in the same copy, you can call it a “Home Learning Copy”.
A note for sixth class, either myself or Ms. White will assign maths work for you to do. All maths work that is completed will be responded to by one of us, or both of us. We will try to respond to everyone as soon as we can but it may be the next school day.
I am aware that some of you may need to be reminded of how to use See Saw so please read the steps below.
Steps on how to use Seesaw
Some Extra Things You can do on Seesaw – using the Green Plus Button. This icon is useful if we had to go into lockdown again – and children wanted to send on pieces of their work on to their teacher. When clicking on the Green Plus button

This Week is Active Schools Week. Ms Foley with the help of Ms. Dunne have organised the following activities you can participate/complete with family or friends at home.
- Links to daily activities on a fundamental movement skill e.g. throwing. When you click on the link – there are three activities (videos) of a person/people carrying out that skill e.g. throwing. Pick one and keep practicing until you have mastered the skill at home! You can then take a picture or video of yourself completing the activity and send it on to your teacher via Seesaw or email.
- Scavenger Hunt – There are two scavenger hunts to choose from – Pick one and have fun completing it with family or friends at home!
- Ms White’s Tik Tok Challenge!! Copy and take a video of yourself completing this challenge with a family member or friend.
- KM Challenge (Monday – Friday) – Record (write down) how many KM you walk, jog or cycle each day!! Add them up at the end of the week and submit your results to the teacher via Seesaw or Email.
- FAI – Home Skills Challenge - The FAI Grassroots have been posting up weekly HOMESKILLS videos on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter– every weekday at 11am. Each day they invite viewers to submit their own video of performing the skill for the chance to win an FAI goodie bag!

Suggested activities June 8th - June 12th 2020
Hi fifth and sixth class,
I hope you all had a lovely weekend. We are heading into the final stretch of our school year and I realise it can be difficult to stay motivated. This week we are going to focus on more fun activities/topics.
Monday: Water Safety
Tuesday: Sun Safety
Wednesday: Making Music with Water
Thursday: Art Challenge - Draw yourself as a Simpsons Character
Friday: Emoji Stories
Instructions for each activity have been uploaded to Seesaw along with the school closure document below. It was brilliant to catch up with sixth class on Zoom and chat about secondary school. Looking forward to seeing you again on Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 11am. Remember to send in your writing for the Covid-19 book we are planning on putting together in school. It is so important to have your piece included especially as the senior class during this pandemic. Have a great week!

Activities for June 3rd - June 5th 2020
Welcome back fifth and sixth class after our lovely, long weekend. I hope you all managed to get out at some stage and enjoy the amazing sunshine. This week is a very short week and we have something different planned for you. As a school we are asking each child to complete a little written activity to document your experience during this global pandemic. Every piece will be put together and printed to form a book/historical document for the school.
My Covid-19 Journey – Instructions
Get an A4 page and divide it into 6 parts (landscape or portrait whichever you prefer)
As the senior class I would love if you could write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) and draw a small picture about each of the following:
Tell me what you enjoyed/missed/can’t wait for. How did/does it make you feel? Who did the activity with you? What was the best part? Did the weather have an impact? Was it a new experience?
This doesn’t have to be completed all in one day. You can break it up over the three days. I have attached a sample sheet to show the layout. We are also looking for a photograph of the children completing an activity at home during Covid-19. This will be shared on the website along with forming the middle page of the book we plan on printing. You can email me the picture at [email protected]. You can take a picture of the written activity and email or post on Seesaw, whichever is easiest for you.
I look forward to hearing about your Covid-19 journey at home and seeing pictures of all the wonderful activities you have been doing to keep busy.

- An activity I enjoyed inside… (baking, cooking, spring cleaning, chores, painting, drawing, reading, zoom calls, etc)

- A school activity I enjoyed completing… (Kahoot quiz, Seesaw activity, minions, natural history tour, Joe Wicks etc)
- My favourite thing I did during home-schooling… (any of the above or something completely different)
- What I missed most due to the school closure… (meeting my friends, school tour, swimming, end of year activities, sports, etc)
- Something I can’t wait to do after the Pandemic… (going on a trip to see family, going back to school, meeting up with my friends, going shopping, going on a holiday, playing football/hurling/soccer again)
Tell me what you enjoyed/missed/can’t wait for. How did/does it make you feel? Who did the activity with you? What was the best part? Did the weather have an impact? Was it a new experience?

Suggested Activities
Welcome back fifth and sixth class. I hope you all had a great weekend and enjoyed the beautiful start to May.
I know sixth class are sad to miss the last term in primary school and all the fun, antics and celebrations that come with it. Please don’t worry. We are putting a plan together to hopefully talk to you all in June and continue some transition work. You are all very capable children and I have no doubt we can help you feel ready for this exciting change in September. I will give a call this week and chat your parents more about what we can do.
For the week ahead, I have uploaded a document with our core suggested activities. There is also an additional activities document with suggestions across the curriculum – P.E., Science, Religion, Maths, English, Gaeilge. Don’t forget to upload your work to your Seesaw journal. It is lovely to see and hear from you. If anyone has any difficulties logging in or using Seesaw, send me an email and I will try my best to help.
Aoife Gallagher came up with a fantastic idea to design your own ‘Thank You to Frontline Workers’ picture/poster. I have added a note into our weekly activities. Upload a snap of the picture to Seesaw and send them on to Aoife. Aoife will make a video using all the pictures and post on the PA Facebook page. It is a brilliant idea to say thanks to those who are working to keep things going in these trying times.
As always, there is no pressure to complete all the suggested activities. Your number one priority is to stay safe and mind yourselves. Looking forward to catching up with you all during the week.
Ms. Brady

The Wedding Singer
We had a lovely break from school on Tuesday the 11th of February. We were kindly invited by Gallen CS to come and watch their annual musical. This year was The Wedding Singer. We had a fantastic morning and even got a little treat at the break. It was cool to see so many past pupils involved in the musical.

Peace Proms Concert
On the 1st of February, 5th and 6th class went to the RDS in Dublin for Peace Proms 2020. We got to Dublin at 11am and we had a little practise with the conductor Greg and the orchestra before the audience arrived in. There was approximately 4,000 people in the audience watching us sing. It was very cool when the parents took out their phones and turned on the lights to wave for the song A Million Dreams. We had such a great day and a stop to Supermacs on the way home just topped it off!
VEX Competition
Running Robots
On the 31st of January 5th and 6th class took part in the VEX IQ stem project. In the competition we came 22nd and there were over thirty schools involved. It was held in the boys secondary school in Tullamore in their Hall. We made it to a semi-final but unfortunately we didn't win. Well done to Kody and Cian for competing in the semi-final. We were teamed up with so many schools including Scoil Mhuire, Daingean and Cappagh. We also took part in a driving skills competition and a programming challenge. It was a great day and we hope to improve even more for next year. Check out some of the pictures below!

The Four Seasons
We were busy creating these stunning trees with our own interpretation of the four seasons in the background. We used pencil to create our tree design and then a black oil pastel to create a silhouette. Blending the oil pastels worked well for each season. Each finished product had their own individual touch.

We are reading a fantastic book called Wonder. We are growing to love the main character August and look forward to learning more about him. We did some WONDERful writing linked to the novel. Check them out on the noticeboard outside our classroom.

The Primary Planet .....What a cool magazine!!!!
(by Ally McLoughlin -5th Class)
The Primary Planet (PP) is a magazine that students in 5th and 6th Class get. The PP is full of news for example
A Past Pupil of the school Ross McLouglin now writes the Diary of a First Year in the PP.
As Normal the boys go to the back to all the sports while the girls go pages 14 and 15 which has all the showbiz and music. There are also lots of competitions one is to find Seimí Seamróg a little lepreachain who is tiny and hard to find. Overall The PP is a cleverly designed magazine that suits students our age and makes news not boring.

The Celts
We learnt all about the Celts. Next we drew our own names in Celtic Styles. After that we wrote about Celtic life and created diary entries as a Celtic child. It was very interesting.
Check out our "Pop Art"
This is our Pop Art. It is based on designs by Andy Warhol. We drew ourselves and designed the faces. Then it was mounted on newspaper and coloured card. Cool!!
Story Writing
We write every week. This month we are focusing on setting the scene.
