Welcome to our class blog 2022 - 2023
We had a Spooktacular day at our school!
There were some very spooky girls and boys at our school today.
Take a look at the huge effort the children made in getting ready for their Halloween fancy dress day at school.
How boo-ti-ful do they all look!
Maths Week 2022
Maths is so much fun and is at the core of everything we do.
During Maths week we highlighted the creativity of the subject and had lots of fun while doing so.
We made some insect and bug hotels
Following on from our learning of biodiversity. We made our own insect and bug hotels.
An insect hotel improves a garden's biodiversity and benefits lots of different types of minibeasts and insects such as ladybirds, bees, spiders and woodlice. They are vital to keeping the ecosystem working.
We had lots of fun gathering the things we needed to make our bug hotels on our autumn nature walk within our local environment.
We had so much fun creating these and are happy to know we have made some safe spaces for the minibeasts to shelter, lay their eggs, raise their young and seek refuge from predators.

Biodiversity day
In October we had an amazing Biodiversity workshop with Nuala Madden, who came to our school and taught us all about the rich variety of life on earth.
We investigated lots of mini-beasts, trees and plants within our local area and focused our learning on the beautiful amenity that we are priviledged to have on our doorstep- The Grand Canal and Greenway.
We learned that everything is interconnected or dependent on everything else!
We increased our awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats and enjoyed our nature walk and mini-beasts investigations.

What can you see inside my snow globe?
Athletics Training
We thoroughly enjoyed all our Athletics training and had lots of fun with Eoghan learning so many new skills over the past few weeks of training.
Have a Spooktacular Halloween!
There were some very spooky and scary characters around Saint Mary's N.S this Halloween!
Autumn is here!
Myself
We are learning all about myself and in Art we created some beautiful self-portraits.

Active Schools Week - 15th June - 19th June 2020
Welcome back to all the children. I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend and are looking forward to a fun filled Active schools Week this coming week.
Thank you to all who have sent in their Covid-19 Journey activity to date. We have really enjoyed seeing and reading about all the wonderful things that you have all been doing at home during this time. If you haven't had an opportunity to complete or upload this activity, you can still do so this coming week. It can be added to your Seesaw journal or you can email it to me this week at [email protected].
This week is Active Schools Week and Ms.Foley has put together some fun activities and challenges for you all to complete at home with your family and friends. These activities and challenges include;
- Links to daily activities on a fundamental movement skill e.g. throwing. When you click on the link – there are three activities (videos) of a person/people carrying out that skill e.g. throwing. Pick one and keep practicing until you have mastered the skill at home! You can then take a picture or video of yourself completing the activity and send it on to your teacher via Seesaw or email.
- Scavenger Hunt – There are two scavenger hunts to choose from – Pick one and have fun completing it with family or friends at home!
- Ms White’s Tik Tok Challenge!! Copy and take a video of yourself completing this challenge with a family member or friend.
- KM Challenge (Monday – Friday) – Record (write down) how many KM you walk, jog or cycle each day!! Add them up at the end of the week and submit your results to the teacher via Seesaw or Email.
- FAI – Home Skills Challenge - The FAI Grassroots have been posting up weekly HOMESKILLS videos on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter– every weekday at 11am. Each day they invite viewers to submit their own video of performing the skill for the chance to win an FAI goodie bag!
Please select the links below to view each suggested activity in greater detail.
I hope you have lots of fun this week and enjoy all the wonderful challenges and activities.

Welcome back children! I hope you all had a fantastic long bank holiday weekend and enjoyed the amazing sunshine, making more memories with your family this summer.
As this week is only a three day week we are planning some fun activities for you all to complete. As a whole school we are going to create a book and historical document for the school with all the children's pieces of work and pictures included. We would like each child to complete a little activity - (My Covid-19 Journey) that documents your personal experience at home during this pandemic. I will put the instructions below and you can take a picture of your completed activity and email it to me or post it to your Seesaw journal whichever way you find easiest.
We would also like if you could send us a photograph of an activity that you completed at home either inside or outside during this global pandemic. These photographs will be shared on the school website and they will also form part of the school booklet that we will make as mentioned above. You can email these pictures to [email protected] or [email protected]
I look forward to reading all your Covid-19 Journey pieces and to seeing all your photographs of the wonderful activities that you have all completed at home during this unprecedented time. Keep up the great work and dedication.
Ms. Clancy

Well being and mindfulness:
Cosmic Kids Yoga- cosmickids.com
We sent home some work with the children on Thursday but here are some additional ideas that you can be working on at home if you want to keep them busy! We hope this helps!
- Read, Read, Read. Children have been sent with their but any form of reading material will help to keep the brain active. Get the children to summarise the story in their own words and ask them lots of questions about the story.
- Get the children to do some free writing - pick a topic that they like and get them to write about it.
http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/story-starters/ provides some fantastic story starters if the children are stuck for ideas.
- Twinkl are offering a free month to parents. This website is incredible. It is full of printable for everything from pre schoolers upwards. You will find so much here
https://www.twinkl.ie. Use the code IRLTWINKLHELPS.
They have kindly put together school closure packs for each class level.
- Keep practicing their tables and make it fun by playing something like Tables champ between an adult and child and see who is faster off the mark! There are also several maths apps available for phone and tablets.
- For Gaeilge, there are several great children's programmes on TG4 from 3pm. Seachtain na Gaeilge website also has some great ideas to keep practicing the cúpla focail. https://snag.ie
Attached below is a list of home activities that may be completed also. There is also attached a list of useful websites should you require any additional materials.

Chicks have arrived!
On Wednesday 25th March the first egg started to chip, we were so excited going home and when we arrived into school on Thursday morning the first chick had hatched and the second chick had started to chip and was hatching also. The second chick hatched during school on Thursday and we all got to see it hatching out, it was an amazing experience! We named both of those chicks Buster and Lucky and they are black chicks with yellow tufts.
On Friday we got our Easter holidays, but when we were going home the third chick had started to chip. It hatched on Friday night and we have a little fluffy yellow chick now, which we will name when the children return to school. It was a very successful experiment and the children learned so much and were so excited by the whole experience. We hope you enjoyed following the living eggs experiment as much as we did.

Living Eggs
We are incubating chicks in our classroom and we are so excited! The process takes 21 days and we are observing the development daily, its amazing! We have to be very quiet or we will frighten the chicks.
On the first day, we put the eggs into the incubator and then we all made a wish that on 26th of March we would have new life in our classroom, just in time for Easter! Stay tuned for further development!
Duckling Days
We had some ducklings visit our classroom this week. They were born on Ms. Kearns' farm on St. Patricks Day.
We named them; Patrick, Patricia and Pecker!
All the children in the school came to our classroom and had time to stroke and see the baby ducklings. It was very exciting!
We are hoping next week our own chicks will hatch in the incubator just in time for Easter!

Happy Valentines Day from 1st & 2nd Class
"Your heart is in my hands".
A special visitor arrived today in our
classroom all the way from Liverpool!
Winter work within our classroom
Winter is here and we are learning all about seasonal changes that are taking place this season. We completed some fantastic winter acrostic poems. We are very busy in our classroom this term preparing for our Christmas show 'Hey Ewe' which promises to be a Baa-rilliant production. We are learning about Emperor Penguins and have made some clay penguins and paper máche igloos. Check out out Antarctic display pictures. We are also learning all about 'The Titanic' and have learned some very interesting facts.
Autumn Art in 1st & 2nd Class
We learned all about seasonal changes that take place during autumn and we carried out lots of art and crafts projects related to our learning. Check out our slideshow below where you will see our beautiful colourful autumn trees created using the technique of finger painting, scarecrow faces, hanging bats and spooky Halloween pumpkin lanterns.
Our Timelines
We learned all about 'Timelines' in History. We had great fun and completed a picture timeline with the three stages relevant to us to date ; 1. A baby 2. A toddler 3. A child.
