Today we had the privilege of wishing one of the best- our Postman Peter Harte Bon Voyage as he retires at the end of this week. Peter is 43 years serving as a community Postman, most of it in this area and we wish him health and happiness going forward.
Our pupils celebrated his career with pictures of him(infants) a card for him (1st/2nd class) a poster (3rd/4th) and a postcard (5th/6th) bringing our appreciation into many of the elements of his postage work over the years. he had a cuppa in the staffroom and was presented with a card and voucher from the BOM to wish him well before he visited all the classrooms to be presented with the pupils tokens.
We hope he always stays connected with our community as he has connected with so many in his years here.

Welcome back to a new and hopefully normal school year. The weather is still glorious and we hope that all our pupils and families had a really good summer break.
Well done to all involved in the Pride of Place last week. Our school garden was visited and our Parent's Association were part of the presentation in the Community Centre. As a school we are lucky to be part of a thriving and active community here.
We are planning a happy and work and fun filled year of school. We welcome our new pupils to the infants room and through the school. We also welcome Ms Arlene Boylan who will teach Junior/Senior Infants this year and Ms Liz Gallagher who will cover Ms White's admin days.
If we can help in any way as the return to school continues don't hesitate to e-mail us at [email protected]. Each teacher also has a dedicated email and they will share those with you shortly.
Our Junior/Senior class were out in the field today and looked a picture so I took one and it's below! Hope they always love school as much.
Stay safe,

As the Summer Term flies along it's great to have lots of good news of activities to share with our school community.
Firstly congratulations to our 6th class pupils who received their confirmation on April 2nd along with Boher NS in Ballinahown.
Best wishes also to our 2nd class who will receive their First Holy Communion this Satur day here in Pullough Church. While these are both smaller events than in the past it is great to see them happening at the usual time of the year for families.
Our Cumann na mBunscol Football competitions are almost complete with our boys into a final next Monday at 1pm against Cloghan NS in St brendan's Park, Birr. School will close for all pupils at 12pm that day to facilitate supporters travelling. The team will get their plans from Ms Foley separately. Many thanks to Neville Dunne for helping Ms Foley with training and matches for the boys team.
Our Girls have two matches to play tomorrow and Friday and we will know then if they are through to a final and well done to both Panels for playing their best.
swimming has started in Clara Pool for 3rd-6th classes and our Infants-2nd classes are having dance/skills sessions with Rinnce each Wednesday morning.
Our 5th/6th had a great day last Friday May 6th at the offaly VEX Championships in O Connor Park. They competed well and had a super time. Thanks to Ms Brady and Mick Mc Hale for all the time and work put into supporting the pupils with this STEM project. Our new Chromebooks and ipads were well used for VEX VR in class and for coding work.
Our front garden is looking very well and thanks as always to the Tidy Towns ladies and pupils and we are taking part in the Pride of Place with the village so all is almost ready for the judging.
Our new outdoor classroom looks really well and a big thank you to Sean MC Quillan for all his work. Our next job will be to plant the garden part of the installation and start using it with pupils. We hope to put a whiteboard or chalkboard on the wall facing to help with classwork out there.
Watch out for news over the next few weeks of active schools work going on in school and our planning has started for our Active Schools Week in June which will be the 13-17th and will finish with our full school heading to Limerick for our Activity Day school tour.
Below are some pictures from the VEX day, the boys team celebrating getting into the Final, our new outdoor classroom installation and the school garden.

As we continue to slowly return to a more normal school life we have made a few changes this week and the buzz is great!
Since Tuesday the 22nd March our pupils can gather in the yard between 9:20 and 9:30 as they did before covid changed all our lives.
We have all classes now out on break together using both pitch and big field and have moved to two 20 minute breaks with a movement break during the afternoon.
Very happily we are have also returned to Reading Buddies where for the first time we have included the Junior Classes and the 6th class are reading to them. Some collages from the first day of Reading Buddies below.
Ms Foley has attended the AGM of Cumann na mBunscol and the fixtures meeting and matches will start very soon- maybe even next week. We will participate in both Girls and Boys Football this year.

As the world hovers between war and peace our young people may experience some stress and anxiety around this topic and may come to you with questions. the DES Educational Psychologists have sent us a leaflet that may help you with looking after your child if they have questions or are upset. They have sent a similar leaflet to support teachers in the classroom.
The document is available to read below.
Please also note as per letter today we are inviting pupils to wear green for St Patrick's Weekend next Wednesday and donate a euro towards a school collection for Ukraine. The school will match the euros and send the donation to the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.
Stay safe. M White and staff.

As announced by the Government on 22/2/2022 pupils from 3rd-6th classes are no longer required to wear masks in school from Monday February 28th. Any pupil who wishes to do so can still wear a mask at any time if they or their parents wish.
Teachers will continue to follow all protocols currently in place and we will review all our school routines over the next while. We will proceed with care as we are aware that covid is still around and contagious.
It is great to see mask lifting for our pupils and we hope this is the start of better times for all.

Our pupils all observed a minutes silence at 11am today as the funeral of Ashling Murphy was taking place. They all gathered in the yard and read the words shared by Durrow school which we have on our memorial poster.
Our poster will stay in our front window this week and our flag will remain at half mast until this Friday.
As each class takes their walks this week they will also stop at the Grotto and say a prayer for Ashling and her family as the community did so beautifully last Saturday after the walk/run in her honour.

Please note that we have been informed today by the DES that in line with recommendations from NPHET it has been decided that from September 27th, automatic contact tracing of asymptomatic close contacts in children over 3 months and less than 13 years in early learning and primary School settings is no longer recommended.
This means that our pupils who are identified as close contacts in school going forward will not be required to restrict their movements if they are asymptomatic. and there will be non contact tracing through school.
If your child is identified however as a close contact in your household setting they will still need to restrict their movements even if they are asymptomatic and that will be informed through the HSE contact tracing service as always.

Yesterday all schools received confirmation from the Department of Education that we are to remain closed in line with Government policy to manage the spread of Covid -19. The Government will continue to monitor the ongoing public health situation and will keep us informed.
For us this means a continuation of Remote Learning and a big thank you to all pupils and parents who are working alongside our staff to remain positive and continue to engage with learning at this time. Work will continue to be posted here on the website, e-mailed to parents, posted and replied to on Seesaw and class and SET zoom sessions will also continue and these have been very positive for all as what we all miss most is seeing and hearing each other over this closure.
Thank you to all parents who were available to collect books for pupils yesterday from staff - if you were unable to come please let your child's teacher know and we can make a new arrangement.
As always, work set is there as a guide for parents and most can be completed by pupils or using the videos and voice recordings and other help from teachers. Only complete what is attainable and remember we will all work together if we need to catch up when we get back to school.
As of now we have no dates for sacraments and will be in touch immediately if we receive news.
For now stay safe and keep in touch. M White and Staff.

Another week is flying by and thanks to all pupils and parents and staff for continued hard work as we all work through this weeks tasks and our new zoom connections. It has been super to see all who have been able to join the zoom chats and these will continue next week so watch out for the ID and password from your teachers.
Great engagement on Seesaw as well and we know your other classwork from your list is carrying on too.
Please also be sure to continue to check out the active school page for ideas on things to keep your personal fitness up.
Fresh Today will deliver a parcel for lunch- making for each pupil to cover the three week closure to all homes. If we are closed into the future we will come back and ask if you wish to continue to receive these or not. All families will get them for this three week closure.
Below is the schools Annual Admissions Notice which we legally now have to publish each year. If you have a new pupil to enroll or know of a pupil for enrollment please mention this notice. We will also be in touch with the playschool and will send forms through them as usual in late February.

We are delighted with the response from pupils and families alike to the work posted and the engagement with teachers and staff. The website is very well visited and Seesaw alive all day!
We are meeting again as a staff in the morning on zoom and will plan timetables for class zooms starting next week. The time and invite / link will be sent from your teacher via e-mail along with the rules for using zoom and as always these are an invitation to join where practical for families.
Each class (JI,SI 1st, 2nd etc...) will have a short zoom on a weekly basis with their class teacher and another staff member. A consent form will also e-mailed to you along with the invite. This can be held up to the screen next week or a picture popped on Seesaw. These zoom gatherings are to help pupils stay in touch with their own class and teacher and will be oral language based for the next few weeks.
Special Education Teachers will work with class teachers and set up smaller group zooms where possible and will e-mail invites.
As always each teacher will put their work up at the weekend on this website and will e-mail it out.
Teachers will also pop up any links or ideas or resources they think you may like - as with all things listed these are not a demand but resources for families and pupils.
Below is the link to a letter for parents from the Minister for Education Norma Foley.

Thanks also to Colin Hughes who stars in the Panto for his visit on the day- it really enhanced the whole experience.
Staff are meeting via zoom Monday morning - some in school and some at home and we will finalise plans for learning over the next few weeks. As before work will be on this website on the class blogs, it will be emailed where possible as a list and of course we plan on lots of interaction over Seesaw. As before teachers will email you next week and that will be your contact point if you have a query. if you have a new e-mail you wish to use please send it to [email protected] and it will be given to your child's teacher.
On Monday next Jan 11th between 1 and 2pm parents of pupils who were not in on the last day of the last term may collect the books teachers would like pupils to have at home if they come to the door their child enters by.
Please only come if your child was not in that day as we are trying to limit contact for all.
As before we will try as a staff to include learning opportunities that will be accessible and fun where possible and we will also include links to sites and activities that may be useful.
Below is a message from StarCamps to invite pupils to participate in free online camps if you are interested.
I will be back in touch next week with more updates for all.

This is the message from StarCamp:
*STARCAMP is kick starting 2021 with FIREWORKS! Having just announced it on social media - thousands from all over Ireland have already signed up.
As a gesture of goodwill and in the spirit of encouraging children to have fun and stay healthy, mentally and physically over this new and hopefully final lockdown, STARCAMP have decided to roll out their incredibly positive, fantastically fun, unique Online Camp for every single child in Ireland for FREE. "Simply to give back to the world in a time of need", Aideen O' Grady, STARCAMP's owner has stated.
The intention was to sell the experience to children for the mid term in February, but the STARCAMP team feels that every child in Ireland deserves a positive, happy, feel good kick start to a brand new year... And every parent deserves to get something for FREE after the year they’ve had! (They’ve also earned some quiet time!).
Having cost thousands to create, produce and record, Aideen and her team spent weeks writing, making, editing these 5 x 90 minute programs for children.
Contributors include Keith Barry (showing us magic tricks) and Don Conroy (giving drawing lessons) along with lots of the usual STARCAMP team teaching everything from science experiments, baking, magic, jokes and games to music, dance and drama!
The Online Camp (which can be watched over 5 days or all at once) can be availed of by signing up to it on their website NOW at www.starcamp.ie Please go to the page “Virtual Camp - Jan 21” at the top of the page, fill in your details and a link will then be emailed back to you which you can log into from Monday morning!
We hope that every child will get to enjoy what has been created for the sole purpose of making children smile and feel good!
Wishing you all a content, love filled and happy 2021 where happy memories are made and laughs galore are experienced!
End of starcamp message.*

Today 5th and 6th classes finished painting the windows for the main exit entry areas of the school- a tradition we all love. Below are our fabulous results- a big thank to you to them all for sharing their creative abilities with us all!!!
We are also in the middle of selling tickets for our big PA raffle next Friday, December 18th with lots of great hampers to be won.
Each pupil has participated in the Christmas Colouring Competition sponsored by our local Community Shop and the prizes will be awarded at our raffle next Friday, December 18th. This will be on the yard in our Christmas jumpers and the PA are providing hot Chocolate to keep the BRRRR away.
Classes are all practicing poems and jokes and some dancing and we will send those via Seesaw if we can or post them here on the website when they are recorded.
Then on Monday December 21st we are watching the Helix Christmas Panto online in our classrooms so we are really planning on celebrating Christmas at our best in spite of the pandemic and following all DES/HSPC guidelines.

Update about the school yard improvements.
Over mid-term we put up lovely wall plaques showing native Irish Birds and Animals. These are around the yard and along the front of the school.
We also got a big Map of Ireland and a set of Playground Rules which are on the walls too.
The final excitement came when the new Playground surface (Bound Rubber Mulch) was laid at the back of the yard to reclaim over 90msq of space that had been in trees.
We have some photos below to show you as we can't invite visitors in yet!
Thanks to the PA who are donating €2,500 to this project and to all who helped with the fundraisers last year which brought in almost €1,300. The final cost was €6,200 for the surface and it is guaranteed for many years.
We also got the garden cleared and many thanks to the Tidy Towns for their help. A plaque naming our garden as Gairdín Bhríde (as Sr Brigid sent us a large donation for the garden from America) has been erected near the second pedestrian entrance with the new planting. WE are also getting a mud kitchen for creative play in the new playground area and thanks to Ms Kearns and her fiance for making that for us.

Hello again pupils and families. Isn't it great that as a country we are moving from Stay at Home to Stay Local. Pupils, you have all played a big part in this success and we know you will continue to do so.
We are really pleased with all your work at home so far and the staff are all loving your pictures and stories of work during our school closure. We will keep gathering these and will make a book of memories for us all when we reopen.
This week the staff are delighted to be setting fun activities for the week for you all.
Next week (June 15th-19th) we are having our Active School /Home Week so we will be setting active challenges for you to try at home.
Enjoy the fun activities this week!
End of year reports will be posted home at the end of the week. M White and Staff. 😎👍
03/06/2020
Good morning pupils and parents. We hope you all had a lovely Bank Holiday Weekend and enjoyed the wonderful weather. For the next few weeks we are easing into summer with less core work and more fun work and activities for all. Please try as many as you can to finish out your school year as well as you can!
This week your teachers have details on their pages of our plan to ask each pupil to make a page for us. When the school returns we are planning to gather all our pages and make a book of our thoughts/experiences and fun things we did and learnt at home during this closure. It will help us all record this unusual time and be a great historical record for us as a school community to keep for the future. There are some fun learning activities on Seesaw too.
Also this week and next week 6th class are joining Ms Brady and Ms White on Zoom to chat about the move to secondary school.
The teachers are also planning many more fun activities for next week and our Active Home Week will be from June 15th-19th and we will have details next week for you.
Teahers are also in the process of writing reports over this fortnight and these will go home mid-June.
As always - stay safe and mind yourselves. Marguerite White and Staff. ✨👏

Happy Monday to all our pupils and families. It's hard to believe that May is almost over.
I know our second and first classes will enjoy logging in to seesaw this morning! Remember we will help you celebrate your Special Communion Day when it is safe to do so.
As we head for the longest day of the year in the next month we are asking all our pupils to make one last push at working form home so we can all say we finished our year well.
In June we plan to have more fun activities and of course our Active (Schools) Home Week.
Remember too - this is a short week as we are due to be off this Friday for the Bank Holiday weekend. 😎👍 M White and Staff.
May 18th
2nd Class we are all thinking of you this week in particular as you should have been preparing for your First Holy Communion this Saturday. Ms Clancy and Ms Gallagher have especially been thinking of you and they will be in touch this week. 💙💖
May 18th
As you all know this week the teachers are allowed to go to school to get resources etc.. to prepare online work for you. Ms White took some more pictures of the garden and they are on the school garden page. Thanks to all who are helping mind our garden for us while we are at home.
May 18th
We are really so proud of all our pupils and parents as they continue to engage with their schoolwork. Please keep up the good work and stay safe as the restrictions start to ease a little. Mind yourselves and when we hit June all teachers plan to give less structured work and of course in mid-June we will have our Active Schools at home week.
6th class Ms Brady and Ms White will be in touch shortly about a Zoom Transition Programme and we will post you out workbooks related to that along with consent forms for your parents. We also hope to have an online Graduation event for 6th in late June.
Stay safe and enjoy the fine weather promised this week M White and staff. 😎👍👏
May 10th
Great work completed by pupils last week both on their school work and on their artwork for Frontline Heroes. By doing our pictures it helps us remember why we are staying safe at home as our Frontline workers keep others well, keep our shops open, deliver things to us and manage the roads and other important jobs. We can't wait to see a video of all your pictures. 👍😊
Keep up with your work this week and thanks also to parents who took the teacher's calls last week - we loved the chats and saying hi to all our pupils when we could. We will carry on with these calls this coming week . Stay Safe and mind yourselves. M White and Staff.

May 4th
Hi to all our pupils and families. We hope you are enjoying the sunshine this weekend and relaxing.
As we all head into a full final term online after the announcement last Friday night it is fitting that we send a big message out to everyone and in particular our pupils.
Thank you all so much for your wonderful work at home. This week our teachers are going to call to say hi to parents and pupils and that will help us all get set for our last term to keep our brains active during this time! If you have a special thought or message have it in your head for when that call comes.
Pupils you are such heroes at the moment- it is not easy or simple to be away from your pals and activities but you are doing all this to keep yourselves and your families safe and we are really proud of you all. We love to hear from you either through email or on Seesaw. You look so well on the parents/Tidy Towns Facebook pages with your Easter Eggs and your amazing May bushes.
6th class- we know you are sad to miss your last term in school and Ms Brady and Ms White are planning to set up a way to chat you during June to cover transition and help you feel ready for the change to your new school. We will chat parents about this when we call.
In life we like to know what is going to happen - at the moment all we are certain of is that things are different but that we need to stay at home to keep all families safe.
Now the Government have a plan to move us out of this and if we all keep up the good work we will all see each other soon. Stay safe and mind yourselves. M White and staff.
Active Home Week 2020
Reminder - we had planned to run Active School Week in the middle of June 2020.You may have noticed some schools are running it this week. We still hope to go ahead with this as planned by organizing an Active Home Week for the week of June 15th 2020! It will involve challenging everybody to have fun being active at home for 60 minutes a day! More details, plenty of ideas and Challenge Charts to fill out will follow at a later date! Suggestions/ideas welcome: email\; [email protected] |

Dear Families,
as we start a very unusual Term 3 in school please know that the staff are thinking of you all and missing your company. As always the work listed on this site is a support for home study and as we move forward please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher for explanation and support. Teachers will send you an email next week with an update from myself and themselves on work planned and some new online platforms we are starting to use and again these are only for you to manage what is possible for you at home - the most important thing is to stay safe and enjoy each others company- that's the best learning ! Lunches will come next week for 3 weeks which is a change from the last message and Fresh today have a competition for jerseys that your children may wish to enter.
Stay safe and remember -
Don't stress about schoolwork , when we get back we will all work together to get everything back on track. Just share your love, laughter, calm and strength with your children. No kids are ahead or behind they are at home safe with you and that's all that matters.

We now have most email addresses collected so please send yours on to your teacher over the next two weeks if you haven't already done so. If we are not returning to school on April 20th we will be in touch again with work on the website and additional plans to link pupils more with staff via email and probably the seesaw online platform .
As always have a good break over Easter and we will all weather this together.

Dear Parents, as per the text sent today our lunch providers Fresh Today will post packages to homes this week and every two weeks after that as long as the closure continues. An emergency data waiver for the duration has allowed addresses to be shared only for this purpose and these will be appropriately deleted after this emergency. The packages will be non-perishable goods suitable for lunches for pupils during this time. The Department of Social Protection who funds this project are eager to continue with lunch provision over this period.
27/03/2020
Happy Friday to all we hope you had a nice week. Enjoy the weekend !
We have requested email addresses to be sent to teachers- details on each class page so we can plan for more home-school contact going forward.
Next weeks work will go up as usual over the weekend and as always this is not compulsory and all suggestions for websites etc.. are to support parents and pupils and are not all to be visited or worked from.
Dont forget RTE School TV starts next Monday - details in link below.
Once all email addresses are in we will outline how we plan to use then in the event of schools not reopening after the Easter break.
Stay well and mind yourselves.
27/03/2020
The Department of Education and the Department of Social Protection have decided to support families who normally receive school lunches during this time. Fresh Today will deliver a hamper per student (so two hampers if two pupils and so on) on a given day and we will facilitate by opening the school hall to allow delivery by Fresh Today and collection by one parent per family over a time period.
All proper HSE recommendations around physical and social distancing will be observed.
The hamper will have non perishables for use at home. All families will be included and we urge all families to collect their hamper(s) as this is a sincere gesture of support for families at this time.
We will text date and times for collection next week.
27/03/2020
A special hello today to our 6th class who would have been having their Confirmation Ceremony today - we are thinking of you and know there will be a celebration when all returns to normal.
25/03/2020
Good morning pupils and parents. As you know schools will now remain closed until April 19th at least. Teachers will continue to post work up to the Easter Break and as previously stated this work is a menu and not compulsory. It is in pupil's best interests to keep a work routine as far as possible at home with breaks and active time built in.
If any parent has a query for a teacher please email the school email at [email protected] and the class teacher will respond.
The NCSE have published a list of activities and recommendations for OT and Speech/Language and other areas of Special Educational need on their homepage www.NCSE.ie if any parent wishes to check that out.
The Primary Planet/Newsflash/Epic will publish online at www.newsmagmedia.ie until school reopens with March currently on their site and April coming at the start of April.
As always, mind yourselves and stay safe.
Marguerite and all staff.

Class work for emergency school closure to start from 18/03/2020 -
Parents each teacher will have work on the class tab if you check each tab.
They will update as necessary.
Work is not compulsory but it is very much recommended by the DES and good practice is that during this time all pupils complete a certain amount of work at home.
Reading and any other written work that your child enjoys should also be encouraged as should Art and outdoor play where safe and possible.
Confirmation has been postponed and we will send information as soon as we have it.
March 18th
CJ Fallon and Folens - two of the biggest Publishers have announced today that all their school books are available free to view online while schools are off. If you go to their home page there will be a link to view books if you need them.

Peace Proms 2020
On the first of February, 5th and 6th classes went to the RDS in Dublin for Peace Proms 2020! We got on the bus at 9:10am and left at 9:15am. We were very excited when at 10am we got a shoutout from midlands 103! we were on the bus for about another two hours and then we finally arrived! There were about ten buses infront and behind us! The RDS was huge and when we got to our seats we got to do a little practice. Our conductor Greg Beardsell and the orchestra called the cross boarder orchestra were there with us. There were around 2,500 kids and 200 teachers. There was about 4,000 parents in the audience which means there was over 6,000 people there! It was very cool singing because of the orchestra. we thought it was very cool when we sang a million dreams when all the parents turned on their flashlights on their phones! It was an amazing day and we stopped at the kinegad plaza on the way home and met all the parents. I would recommend it to every child in Irealnd!!!

A visit from DogsTrust 2019
On the 06/02/19 we had a visit from DogsTrust to teach us a little bit about dogs and what DogsTrust do. Paul was the lucky one and got to visit the school with his Greyhound Magic. He also told us about a dog he used to work with. His name was McGivor he was a perfectly healthy dog but he was really
smelly. Luckily he found a nice home with a great family now he has his own big dog bed and he is really happy with the new family. |
Fred The Party Professor 2019
On Friday the 18th we had our annual visit from Fred the Party Professor.
When Fred comes into our school he always does lots of cool magic tricks and plays a little bit of music as well. First, Fred started off with a bit of music. He played the smallest trumpet in the world. Then he juggled normally but then he juggled scarfs…. upside down! After that he brought people up. He got Lorcan Delaney up and then after he brought Abbey Tierney, Ela Buckley, Sheola Rosney, Scott Kidney and Caoimhe Lynam up. All five of us had to hold a music instrument and hold a stick. Fred had to point at one of us and and we would hit the instrument with a stick. We played a tune: "When the Saints". |

Sports Day 2017
On Thursday June 22nd we held our annual Sports Day at the Community Centre. There were races such as sack races, sprint races, relays etc. We also played many fun games such as scavenger hunts, and from 3rd to 6th class we had a soccer blitz. The weather was very kind to us as it wasn't too hot and wasn't raining. Afterwards the teachers gave out treats to all the students for participating. All in all, it was a fantastic day!
Confirmation 2017
After a lot of preparation and planning, our 6th class received their Confirmation on May 12th. The confirmation ceremony was celebrated by Bishop Francis in Ballinahowen. Students from 4th to 6th class could be a part of the Confirmation choir from any of the schools taking part, the singing was excellent, and everyone had a fantastic day.

They come from Dublin in a van and leave it in this box.
The children like myself log in to this website called: https/freshtoday.ie and they have a menu.
They get their own lunch their way. We all think it is a great idea.

Remembered
On Tuesday the 13th of October two army officers from the army barracks in Athlone visited our school. They talked to the children about the 100 year anniversary of the 1916 rising which will be celebrated countrywide next year (2016). They quizzed the children on why we will celebrate this event and the meaning of the colours on our Irish flag. They presented the youngest child in the school with the Irish Flag. After that Sixth class read out the 1916 Proclamation and The Proclamation was then presented to the oldest child in the school. Finally children from fifth and sixth class sang the Irish National Anthem "Amhrán na bhFiann". It was a wonderland day and members of our community even visited the school to celebrate with us on this momentous and historic occasion.

News from The Parents Association:
Communion and Confirmation:
We are approaching Communion and Confirmation time in our school and it’s important to be mindful of the current economic times we live in. It is no longer practical for parents to give a gift of money to each child in the class. This issue has been discussed in the media over the last few years with various solutions being suggested.
The Parents Association of St Mary’s National School Pullough has implemented the following for the past number of years and it has proved to be successful and helpful to all concerned:
●Each family purchase a Communion/Confirmation card.
●The card would be signed “From all in 2nd /6th class.
●A sum of 10 euro would be put in the card.
For Those in Communion class
The card with gift of money in it would be brought in to school the week before Communion and the teacher will hold onto them.
On Communion Day the cards will be given out by the teacher. The result being that each child receives one card with gift of money in it which is from all their class and their families.
For Those in Confirmation class
The card with gift of money in it would be brought in to school the week before Confirmation and the teacher will hold onto them.
On Confirmation Day the cards will be given out after the class photo is taken. The result being that each young person receives one card with gift of money in it which is from all their class and their families.
A reminder letter will be sent out nearer the time.
Hoping this is satisfactory to everyone. Thanks

He performed a wide range of tricks and we could not stop laughing, he got lots of our pupils up to help him with his magic......he even conducted a piece where he instructed a group of sixth class children to perform “Oh When the Saints go Marching in” with musical instruments.
One of his most spectacular tricks was an illusion trick.....where the jokers head became bigger and bigger. It was cool!
He showed us his musical talent by singing and playing lots of instruments, including the world’s smallest trumpet and a harmonic
Have a look at some pictures from our laughter filled evening

Reading Buddies
On October the 14th we started our annual reading buddies. It is a fantastic initiative that increases awareness around reading and always runs very successfully. Reading buddies lasts for four weeks.
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS
An older child e.g. in fifth class is paired with a younger child e.g. in first class. The older buddy listens to the younger buddy read for ten minutes each day. The younger buddy reads books that are graded at their level. Reading buddies is both beneficial for the mentor and young reader. Young readers in the partnership not only improve their reading fluency and build vocabulary, but they also gain self-confidence as they read aloud and gain a mentor that they might not otherwise have access to. On the other hand The older readers develop leadership abilities, take pride in modelling good reading habits, and watch their younger buddy improve his/her reading skills.
